Bon, c'est la fin d'année et même de la décennie… je n'ai rien trouvé de mieux qu'établir une liste très mainstream (non exhaustive) "mylife" sur les albums qui ont marqué ma pauvre existence ou qui signifient, peut-être encore, quelque chose pour moi (Ne vous attendez pas trop à la découverte indie.) Je précise que pour certains de ces albums, je ne les écoute plus que très rarement. Alphabétiquement classé, j'en ai oublié volontairement car certains groupes sont trop homogènes, j'ai pas su trouvé un album qui sortait du lot car ils étaient tous bon. Let's go!
Broken Bells est la collaboration entre James Mercer (le chanteur et leader du groupe The Shins) et du producteur Danger Mouse qui est membre du duo Gnarls Barkley. Il a également produit le second album de Gorillaz "Demon Days", l'album de l'autre projet de Damon Albarn "The Good, The Bad & The Queen" ou encore récemment Attack & Release des Blacks Keys et Modern Guilt de Beck (ce sont tous des excellents albums que j'apprécie grandement donc ça va de soit que j'aime bien Danger Mouse.)
The Shins étant un peu mort en ce moment (le dernier album remonte à 2007) et vu que Mercer a un peu viré tout le monde, d'ailleurs je ne sais plus trop qui il reste, il a un peu de temps à se consacrer à d'autres projets comme celui-là. Sur le papier, ça ressemblerait presque à un Postal Service 2, un leader d'un groupe indie américain assez populaire qui se colle à un projet aux sonorités plus électros... mais il n'en est rien ! Le son est totalement différent, il y a plus de beats hip-hop que des "synthés nintendo". (En même temps, il a raison de tenter sa chance le petit James, vu le succès de The Postal Service, l'album le plus vendu chez Sub Pop avec Bleach de Nirvana...)
Le style de DJ Danger Mouse est assez reconnaissable, d'ailleurs le son du single The High Road ferait presque penser à du Gorillaz ou du Gnarls Barkley. Le single est sympa, mais la première chose qui m'est venue à l'esprit à l'écoute de l'album : je veux un autre album des Shins !!

L'album sort début mars, ce single est déjà disponible mais il parait que l'album court déjà sur le net. J'y ai jeté une oreille, il semble pas mal même si il nécessite 2-3 écoutes supplémentaires.
Des concerts, j'ai du en faire une 40aine cette année... Voici un petit résumé de tout ce que j'ai fais, et j'ai pas envie de savoir combien j'ai mis là-dedans...
Cette fois-ci, une spéciale sextet (pas forcement qu'ils ont des têtes sex mais ils sont composés accessoirement de 6 personnes) avec 3 groupes indie-pop transatlantiques (par notoriété croissante) : One For The Team, Ra Ra Riot et The New Pornographers. (à la base, c'est plus pour promouvoir One For The Team mais vu que The New Pornographers ont le même son qu'eux et qu'ils sont aussi méconnus dans nos contrées, j'en profite...! )
One For The Team (US, Afternoon Records)
Petit groupe power-pop indie totalement inconnu, One for The Team est un sextet originaire des Etats-Unis, du Minnesota plus précisément. Découvert par Jumex a.k.a Chris Walla, le guitariste et producteur de Death Cab for Cutie (encore ! qu'est ce qu'il a bon goût celui-là alors) sur un mystérieux #followfriday, j'ai bien aimé les extraits sur leur myspace. C'est ultra pop notamment le chant composé presque exclusivement de chœurs bien catchys comme il faut et un son de gratte comme je les aime. Je ne dirais pas que c'est limite pompé sur The New Pornographers mais presque :p ! Le groupe possède 3 albums : Good Boys Don't Make Noise (2006) pas vraiment terrible mais Build It Up (2008) et Build A Garden (2009) valent le détour.

Découvert grâce à leur tournée estivale avec Death Cab for Cutie cet été, les américains de Ra Ra Riot ont également ouvert pour Editors, The Cribs ou Tokyo Police Club et ils commencent à avoir un peu de notoriété. Ils ont un son indie assez spécial, un son un peu baroque vu que le groupe est composé, en partie, d'une violoniste et d'une celliste et ça sonnent vachement bien...! Avis aux amateurs de groupes avec ces instruments là. Ra Ra Riot possède un EP "Ra Ra Riot" et un album "The Rhumb Line" qui sont vraiment très bons. Ils sont/étaient chez Barsuk Records (l'ex label indie de DCFC !) et leurs influences sont Tokyo Police Club ou encore Vampire Weekend... ça se ressent un peu !
The New Pornographers est aussi un sextet fou furieux mais canadien (YAY CANADA! J'ai un amour musical fou pour ce pays c'est dingue.) J'ai depuis un moment un gros coup de cœur pour ce groupe, il faut reconnaitre que c'est l'un des noms de groupes les plus funs qui existent (et j'avoue aussi que j'ai connu ce groupe car ils ont fait la première partie de Death Cab for Cutie avec Tegan & Sara cet été...)
Sinon niveau musical, le groupe mené par le talentueux A.C. Newman est très indie power-pop, les compositions sont riches (l'orgue ♥) et c'est très festif/bordélique à la fois... on ressent vraiment la joie qu'ils ont de chanter en chœur dans leurs disques, un bon groupe canadien bien comme j'adore ! Il n'y a pas de chanteur officiel, ils changent à chaque morceau et souvent chantent ensemble (entre A.C ou Neko Case, y'a le choix! Surtout que Neko est très connue en solo dans le domaine country) Ils ont 4 très bons albums : Mass Romantic (2000), The Electric Version(2003), Twin Cinema (2005), et Challengers même si ce dernier paru en 2007 est un poil décevant car on ressent moins de joie de la part du groupe. Le 5ème va sortir courant 2010, un évènement à suivre de près.
Le groupe est ultra connu outre-atlantique mais chez nous... non. (Pour ceux qui se basent uniquement sur Pitchfork, pour info la moyenne des albums tourne dans les 8-9) Ils feront quelques dates en Europe en Mai 2010 dont le Primavera Festival mais rien de prévu en France pour le moment (snif)

(PS: On remarquera que je suis toujours aussi fanboy de Death Cab for Cutie que j'ai cité sans vouloir une dizaine de fois, ralala je n'ose m'imaginer que deviendrais-je sans eux!)
Dernier concert de l'année (snif) avec une très belle affiche au Bataclan : Les anglais Editors accompagnés des Maccabees et des canadiens de Wintersleep (w00t!). Ce concert à Paris était la dernière date de la première tournée européenne du dernier album "In This Light and On The Evening" qui a durée environ 7-8 semaines. Je l'aime bien cet album, le groupe a totalement rangé les guitares pour du presque 100% synthés. Sur le papier, j'étais censé le détester cet album là mais c'est un de mes préférés avec d'excellents morceaux où Tom chante toujours aussi bien (enfin dur de faire un choix, les 3 albums sont excellents.) J'ai jamais eu l'occasion de voir Editors et j'attendais l'opportunité depuis un moment, donc je me suis rendu au concert "un peu plus qu'enthousiaste"!
The Shins - Phantom Limb : Je n'ose pas m'aventurer dans le (trop) long Tracks of the Decade mais ce titre est simplement magique et figurerais certainement dans mon top 10. Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal : Il neige et on fête ça avec le single (très moyen) des Fleet Foxes. (Le reste de l'album étant une tuerie) Broken Social Scene - Fire Eye'd Boy: Une dizaine de Canadiens dans la minuscule salle de la Maroquinerie, ça vous dit ? C'est le 21 mai. Animal Collective - Bluish : Oui, tout le monde le dit, Merriweather Post Pavillon c'est "l'album de l'année" sauf que moi, j'en suis toujours au stade "WTF C'est quoi ce truc?" (sauf pour My Girls!) Manic Street Preachers - Peeled Apples : Un album sous-estimé, placé n°4 chez DiS (mérité) Girls - Lust For Life : L'autre groupe Pitchfork, je dois avouer que ce single est assez sympa mais l'album c'est très pompé sur les groupes comme Pavement ou l'early stuff de Dinosaur Jr. (genre Bug) The Dandy Warhols - The Last High Camera Obscura - The Blizzard
Ayé la nouvelle depuis hier tourne sur le web, John Frusciante quitte la navire des Red Hot Chili Peppers. Je ne sais pas comment prendre la news, c'est une de mes idoles mais ses albums solo sont tellement bons (surtout le petit The Empyrean, Number #1 2009 chez moi n'oubliez pas) Il est actuellement remplacé en studio par son ami Josh Klinghoffer, le second guitariste de tournée des Red Hot et un ami de longue date de John Frusciante, qu'il aide notamment sur ses projets solo...
"The whole big rock band machinery just doesn't appeal to him anymore" en gros, le profit ne l'intéresse plus, seul et uniquement la musique compte (et c'est ça qu'est bon !) Un des plus grands fous de l'histoire du rock encore en vie. Une page se tourne, il reviendra peut-être quand il aura trouvé "his own path" vers la spiritualité et le nirvana musical...
"When I quit the band, over a year ago, we were on an indefinite hiatus. There was no drama or anger involved, and the other guys were very understanding. They are supportive of my doing whatever makes me happy and that goes both ways.
To put it simply, my musical interests have led me in a different direction. Upon rejoining, and throughout my time in the band, I was very excited about exploring the musical possibilities inherent in a rock band, and doing so with those people in particular. A couple of years ago, I began to feel that same excitement again, but this time it was about making a different kind of music, alone, and being my own engineer.
I really love the band and what we did. I understand and value that my work with them means a lot to many people, but I have to follow my interests. For me, art has never been something done out of a sense of duty. It is something I do because it is really fun, exciting, and interesting. Over the last 12 years, I have changed, as a person and artist, to such a degree that to do further work along the lines I did with the band would be to go against my own nature. There was no choice involved in this decision. I simply have to be what I am, and have to do what I must do.

Mercredi 9 décembre, c'était la soirée Xmas Party de Cooperative Music à la Flèche d'or, avec une putain d'affiche pour seulement 8€!
Donc au programme : 2 allemands frère et soeur Get Well Soon (DE, City Slang) en acoustique, le folk electro big-beat de James Yuill (UK, Moshi Moshi), mes 2 chouchous de 2008 Blood Red Shoes (UK, V2) et une (petite) surprise mais j'avais mon idée en voyant Kitsuné sur le flyer !
Dernière ligne droite pour les concerts de 2009 (snif), j'ai oublié de parler de Them Crooked Vultures à l'Album de la Semaine le 04 décembre, c'était vachement bien (le meilleur ADLS de toute ma vie et un des meilleurs concerts de 2010, 1h30 de pure folie!!!) Et Julian Casablancas dans tout ça, ex-Strokes membre des Strokes de son état, était à Paris cette semaine pour créer "l'évènement" suite à la sortie de son premier album solo 'Phrazes For The Young', en somme très loin des Strokes puisqu'il sonne très électro-pop avec beaucoup de synthés mais à la fois très similaire notamment sur la voix, car oui les Strokes, c'est avant tout une voix spéciale et unique, celle de Julian Casablancas ! (même si "The Brain" Albert Hammond Jr. n'a rien à lui envier !)
My Brightest Diamond - Tainted Love : et oui il n'y pas les 2 albums de ma Reine Shara Worden, de loin la voix féminine la plus puissante du moment (Plus que Carey ou Houston c'est pour dire). Elle était à Paris hier pendant que je siestais paisiblement, je suis un de ses plus grands fans en France donc quand j'ai appris ça à 4 heures du mat', j'avais très mal là où je pense. Brendan Benson - Poised & Ready : je crois que j'ai finalement trouvé la chanson la plus catchy de l'année. James Yuill - She Said In Jest : il a joué à la fameuse Xmas Party de Cooperative Music cette semaine et il se démerde plutôt bien. Editors - Bricks & Mortar : un excellent morceau, ce seront les maitres la semaine prochaine, j'ai vraiment hâte The Maccabees - Can You Give It : ils ouvriront pour Editors mais je trouve pas ça transcendant. Wintersleep - Weighty Ghost : ils ouvriront pour Editors aussi, mais ils sont canadiens et ont un son totalement diffèrent. One For The Team - Best Supporting Actress : petit article sur eux soon. Cette fois-ci le top tracks, composé de titres catchys et efficaces mais aussi des chef-d'oeuvres de techniques et d'élaborations. On remarquera qu'il y a pas mal d'électro. Évidemment, c'est 1 par artiste et si jamais j'ai zappé un hit incontournable => comments!
Sorti le 3 Novembre 2009 et 1 an et demi après le Red Album, Raditude est le 7ème album du groupe américain Weezer. Weezer, qu'on ne présente plus, est "un peu" mon groupe mainstream favori depuis des lustres, j'aime presque tout leurs albums même si ils sont très très différents les uns des autres. Le fait qu'ils soient si méconnus et impopulaires en Europe/France me dégoute un peu à vrai dire... Du coup, ils ne font leurs tournées qu'aux States/Canada/Asie.
J'avais bien aimé le Red Album dès la première écoute, pas mal décrié par les fans mais il a quand même fait mon top 15 2008 avec le masterpieceThe Greatest Man That Ever Lived, Pork and Beans, Dreamin', Troublemaker, Hearts Song ou The Angel and The One. Là avec Raditude, j'ai eu plus de mal au début, il m'a fallu un certain temps avant d'apprécier quelques chansons. La chose qui m'a le plus déçu sur le Red, c'était la place des chansons écrites par les autres membres du groupe, et non par Rivers... les Automatic ou Though I Knew du Red, merci de les mettre dans le disque bonus et pas sur l'album ! Exemple : Patrick Wilson, il est bien gentil mais maintenant, il est passé de la batterie à la guitare et veux faire ses chansons (le relou...!) donc le groupe a du recruter le mercenaire de la batterie, j'ai dénommé le très expérimenté Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, The Offspring, Guns 'n' Roses, A Perfect Circle, Qotsa, Tool, Devo et maintenant Weezer)
Raditude est sorti en 2 CD, le deuxième comprenant quelques chansons bonus et la pochette est super coolos ! Ma préférée de l'année, The Flying Dog rocks!

Them Crooked Vultures - Gunman, j'ai eu la chance de pouvoir les voir à Paris hier, de la folie pure, c'est clairement un groupe live, et de loin le meilleur Album de la semaine que j'ai jamais fait. PUTAIN QU'EST CE QUE C'ÉTAIT BON (désolé) Blood Red Shoes - Stitch Me Back, Nouvel album début 2010 et à la Flèche d'Or ce mercredi, The Place to Be donc. Un extrait est disponible sur le site du groupe. Rage Against The Machine - Tire Me The White Stripes - Death Letter, la perle du groupe, le meilleur morceau de Jack White tout simplement, à écouter absolument. Dinosaur Jr. - Just Like Heaven (The Cure Cover) Two Door Cinema Club - Something Good Can Work Editors - No Sound But The Wind, plus qu'une semaine et la voix de Tom impose sur ce morceau. Muse - MK Ultra dédicace à celui qui se reconnaitra :D. Stereophonics - Mr. Writer
22/03 Phoenix à l'Olympia, après une Cigale et un Zénith complet cette année et une tournée ARCHI SOLDOUT sur toute la planète, incroyable (je crois que c'est la bonne cette fois ci) 07/05 Pavement au Zénith enfin une date à Paris pour la reformation d'un des plus importants groupes des 90s dans le très... grand Zénith. Évidemment, inutile de préciser que tous les membres de Pavement sont en dèche de thunes! 12/05 Black Rebel Motorcycle Club au Bataclan, album courant mars 2010 qui sera peut-être encore rock'n'roll ? 11/06 Muse, 2ème Stade de France..."due to overwhelming demand"
Et puis j'en profite pour en remettre une couche pour Two Door Cinema Club le 24/02 au Nouveau Casino... mais c'est tellement bon! L'album sort le 22 février, l'attente est difficile!
Plus de grosses sorties à l'horizon pour 2009, il est temps de faire un bilan personnel des albums sortis cette année, en attendant les albums attendus de Beach House (déjà leaké) et de Two Door Cinema Club pour l'année 2010.
L'année dernière, j'ai été marqué par The Raconteurs, Airbourne, Portishead, Blood Red Shoes, Goldfrapp, Laura Marling, Fleet Foxes, Foals, The Black Keys ou encore Beck (entre autres) Voila un petit classement totalement subjectif, qui ne reflète en rien la vérité universelle et il est composé seulement avec les albums que j'ai eu le temps d'écouter...
